Equal Roots is a peer-support and signposting group for parents — of any gender — navigating custody and child-arrangement disputes. We believe that, wherever it’s safe to do so, both parents should be able to stay meaningfully present in their child’s life.
Who Are We
We’re parents and volunteers who’ve been through custody and child-arrangement disputes ourselves, sharing what we’ve learned so nobody has to face it alone. Equal Roots was founded by Susan Mac Nicol.
We’re not solicitors, mediators or counsellors, and nothing we say should be relied on as legal advice. We don’t represent members in court or mediation, and we don’t take sides in anyone’s individual dispute — but we can point you towards people who can help, and share what’s worked for other parents in similar circumstances.
What Are Our Goals
Our aims are to:
- Share practical, lived experience among parents facing similar circumstances
- Signpost members and the wider public to appropriate legal, welfare and support resources
- Champion the principle that, wherever it’s safe to do so, both parents should be able to remain meaningfully present in their child’s life
How Can You Help
Equal Roots is built on shared experience — and we’d love to hear yours. Here’s how to get involved:
- Get in touch and introduce yourself
- Tell your story, so other parents know they’re not alone
- Share your experience — the practical things that worked, and the things that didn’t
- Let us know what helped, so we can pass it on to others in a similar position
