What is Equal Roots?
Equal Roots is a peer-support and signposting group for parents going through custody and child-arrangement disputes. We’re parents and volunteers sharing what we’ve learned — we’re not solicitors, mediators or counsellors.
Who can join Equal Roots?
Membership is open to any parent — of any gender — who supports our aims, regardless of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, disability or relationship status.
Is Equal Roots a registered charity?
Not currently. Equal Roots is an unincorporated association governed by the law of England and Wales — we’re not a company or a registered charity.
Can Equal Roots give me legal advice?
No. Nothing said at our meetings, in our materials, or by our volunteers should be relied on as legal advice or as a substitute for advice from a qualified solicitor. Our Useful Links page has a good starting point for finding one.
Will Equal Roots represent me in court or mediation?
No. We don’t represent members in court, in mediation, or in negotiations with an ex-partner, local authority or Cafcass.
Do you take sides in individual disputes?
No. We take a neutral, non-adversarial approach and don’t offer opinions on the rights or wrongs of anyone’s specific case.
Is what I share kept confidential?
Generally, yes. Anything you share with our members or volunteers is kept confidential, except where disclosure is necessary to prevent harm to a child or adult, or is required by law.
What if I’m worried a child is at risk of harm?
Please contact the police or your local authority’s children’s social services team without delay. Our Useful Links page has more information on who to contact.
Do you offer counselling?
No, but we can point you towards organisations that do — see our Useful Links page for some suggestions.
